India leases largest and most advanced Russian nuclear submarine for 10 years (X @front_ukrainian)
India has signed a contract worth around $2 billion to lease a Russian nuclear submarine for 10 years, after years of negotiations marked by price disagreements.
According to Bloomberg, the new submarine will be larger than the models previously operated by the Indian Navy and is expected to be delivered in about two years, although the complexity of the project may cause delays.
Under the contract, the submarine cannot be used in combat, serving exclusively as a training platform. The vessel will allow Indian crews to master long-range operations, prolonged submerged crossings, and stealth procedures, while also helping the Navy improve its tactics and advance in the development of its own nuclear submarines. Russia will also be responsible for maintenance throughout the leasing period.
India had already returned the Russian submarine K-152 Nerpa in 2021, opting to invest in its own nuclear infrastructure. The practice of military leasing is common between countries, with the United States leading this type of agreement by promoting its weapons, especially fighter jets, to foreign forces.
The new lease strengthens the strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow in sensitive technologies.
